Answered Prayer

By Rachael Helsel

Standing alone by the fountain of love
A middle aged man whispered a fervent prayer
To the silent statue of Aphrodite above:
“Find me a woman and in her soul stir
Love’s blissful blindness to my fatal flaws.”
And as his coin fell his confidence rose,
Fair Venus supported his worthy cause.
Farewell to insecurities: his age, his girth, and clothes,
Then glancing up he saw a young and beautiful face
And cried out “I found you: the love of my life!”
But he tripped and fell to the water’s embrace
And drowned unfulfilled in his quest for a wife.
Shoulders falling in relief, the girl looked up and said,
“Thank you, goddess, for hearing my prayer instead.”
